When you have installed MiKTeX, the TeXMF root directory
(usually `c:\texmf') contains the following subdirectories:
- `bibtex'

For BibTeX input files.
- `doc'

- `makeindex'

For MakeIndex input files.

TeX hierarchy.
The MiKTeX directory (usually `c:\texmf\miktex') is reserved for
implementation dependend files. It contains five subdirectories:
- `base'

For `.base' (METAFONT base) files.
- `bin'

For executable files.
- `config'
-
This directory contains the configuration file `miktex.environment'
and the configuration utility `configure.exe'
(see section How to configure MiKTeX).
Furthermore this directory contains the file name data base
`texmf.fndb'.
- `fmt'

For `.fmt' (TeX format) files.
- `mem'

For `.mem' (MetaPost Memory) files.
